Free to play doesn't mean free, period. Here's how the model pays for itself, and how to stay in control of what you spend.
A free-to-play game downloads or opens without paying, and most players never pay. The game lives off a minority who buy: virtual currency, a subscription, cosmetic items or extra playing time.
That's neither good nor bad in itself. It all depends on how the game presents its purchases.
In a virtual-currency game, you never buy value: the currency doesn't leave the game. If you lose it in a round, it's gone, like the price of a movie ticket once the film is over.
| Safeguard | Why it matters | At Pothole |
|---|---|---|
| Clear price and content | You know what you're buying before you pay | Each stack shows its exact token count, taxes included |
| No random content | A mystery pack adds a second draw at purchase | No loot boxes or random packs |
| No fake urgency | A countdown pushes you to decide fast | No countdowns; promotions have real, announced dates |
| No auto-renewal | A forgotten subscription pays itself | The Pass never renews; no card stored |
| Spending cap | It stops a night that gets out of hand | $1,000 a month, maximum |
| No paid edge on leaderboards | Otherwise the leaderboard measures your wallet | “Weekly winnings” excludes purchases |
On your side: set a monthly amount before you start, count in dollars rather than tokens, and never buy again to "win it back" after a bad run. On a phone shared with kids, turn on required approval for every purchase in the settings.
In Pothole, you play without paying anything: 10,000 free tokens when you confirm your email, then a bonus every day. Purchases are optional: stacks from $2.99 to $89.99 and the Pass at $8.88 for 30 days. Stack bonuses are extra tokens and cosmetic skins; no purchase changes the odds or the 97% RTP. Tokens have no monetary value and are never withdrawn. The full rules are on Pothole's responsible play page.
Free account, 10,000 welcome tokens, then a daily bonus that grows with your streak (1,000 to 3,500).
Virtual tokens, never convertible to money · 18+ (19+ in some provinces)
It's free to play, with optional purchases. You can play without paying; the game is funded by the players who choose to buy.
A purchase made inside the game: virtual currency, a subscription, a cosmetic item. In a token game, what you buy has no resale value.
No. The odds and the 97% RTP are the same for everyone. Buying gives more rounds, never better chances.
