Token games

Definition

A token game takes a casino mechanic (crash, wheel, cards) and runs it on an internal currency that trades for nothing. You get it at sign-up and through bonuses, sometimes you buy some, but it never leaves the game. In Canada, the exit is what matters: section 206 of the Criminal Code targets games where you stake to win money or goods. An internal currency with no value and no conversion is not a prize.

Why it's still fun

• The multiplier climbs just the same, and the cash-out decision is just as hard when your balance is running out.
• The leaderboards give you stakes: the highest cashed-out multiplier and the week's winnings, never the biggest account or purchased tokens.
• Personal records, skins, collections: reasons to come back that cost nothing.

Traps to avoid (publisher side)

A token game can be as manipulative as a casino if it wants: infinite refills that trivialize loss, countdowns on packs, "offers" that expire. Our rules for Pothole: no unlimited refills, a fixed daily bonus, a stack store without artificial urgency, cosmetic-only purchase bonuses, and a monthly cap. Traps to avoid (player side)
