Are crash games rigged?

What's just chance, what's a scam, and how to tell the difference before you bet.

The question comes up a lot, especially after a string of low crashes. The short answer: a serious crash game doesn't need to be rigged, because the house edge is already written into its rules. But genuinely dishonest sites exist, and a few signs help you spot them.

An honest game still makes you lose

With a 97% RTP, the game keeps 3% of what's staked on average. Over an evening the swings are huge: you can lose everything without anything being rigged. A bad run isn't proof of cheating; it's exactly what the probabilities predict now and then. On Pothole's Expressway, for example, 37.8% of rounds stop at the first km: five in a row happens about once in 130 sets of five.

No promise of winningsA site that guarantees you'll win is lying, every time.

The role of provably fair and regulators

They complement each other. Provably fair proves a round wasn't altered mid-way; it guarantees neither that the site pays nor that its RTP is right. A regulator oversees the operator: licensing, game testing, protection of funds, recourse in a dispute. In Canada, Ontario has its own regulated market (iGaming Ontario) and in Québec, Loto-Québec is the authorized operator; many sites open to Canadians hold foreign licences. Our page on the Québec framework explains what that means for you.

What about Pothole?

Pothole isn't a gambling game: you play with tokens that are worth nothing and are never withdrawn, so there's no withdrawal to block. Its RTP (97%) is published, every round shows its SHA-256 fingerprint at the start and reveals its seed at the end, and you can verify it yourself.

Real-money play is 18+ (19+ in most provinces). If you feel you need to "win it back" after a run, read our responsible gambling page.

Frequently asked questions

Are crash games rigged?

Serious ones aren't: the house edge is already in the rules. Scams do exist, mostly unlicensed sites, fake apps and predictors.

Does a long losing streak prove the game is rigged?

No. Streaks are part of chance. Only a gap that persists over a very large number of rounds, or a proof that doesn't match, is a real signal.

How do I check a casino's licence?

Note the regulator's name and number shown at the bottom of the site, then look them up on the regulator's official website, not through a link the casino gives you.
